Overview

In general, online courses are learning systems that are carried out online in virtual classes. According to SKYDU there are two types of online courses that can be used on a platform :

  1. Synchronous is an online course that is guided directly by a tutor who provides features that allow real time teaching such as video conferencing, instant messaging, or chat.

  2. Asynchronous, namely online courses that can be done independently without the presence of a tutor.

Based on the explanation above, the description of the UI design of the course platform in this case study includes the two types of online courses. However, the asynchronous type can only be participated in live webinar activities.

Problem

In the online learning process, students feel limited in understanding the material that has been given by the mentor, there is no direct interaction with the teacher and their peers. This online learning can be said to be ineffective in online learning if there is no platform that suits their needs.

Goals

  • Finding out user needs in the use of course-based learning applications

  • Finding out user needs in conducting online learning

  • Finding out user habits in doing online learning

  • Find out the level of usability, convenience, and satisfaction of the idea solutions offered in the flow of the registration process, course search, course payments, learning implementation, and using other features.

Empathize

This initial step is empathize, which aims to gain a deep understanding of the user's view of a digital product. It also relates to their needs when using online and offline learning applications.

Define

This define stage is a step process to gather all the insights gained from stage Four (Empathy) and formulate the problem to be solved by design.

User Persona

Fauzan is here as a persona that represents the characteristics and needs of users, to help the product design and development team understand who the users of the product are, what they need, and how they will use the product.

Ideate

At this ideate stage, a priority will be selected from all the ideas given. The idea solution that becomes the solution to the problem obtained, is formulated in the “How Might We” session. HMW is used to transform problem statements into more specific and actionable design opportunities. HMW will help to focus on finding innovative and focused solutions, promote creative thinking, and open up space for different ideas to be explored in the design process.

UI Design

User Interface Design is the process of designing the visual appearance and interaction of the user interface for STAR applications. UI design is important in creating a good first impression to users and supporting an overall positive user experience.

Testing

Testing of the design solution provided, and assisted by the System Usability Scale methodology. SUS is a global assessment of usability aspects (effectiveness, efficiency, and satisfaction) subjectively perceived by users. The SUS score can indicate the level of user acceptance. The SUS score must be more than 70 (Brook 2013) to be included in the Acceptable category. The SUS score from STAR Apps is 72.5 in the Acceptable category. SUS score is considered Good if it is worth more than 70.4 (Bangor et al., 2009). The SUS score from STAR Apps is 72.5 in the Good category.

Suggestions for improvement from users who are willing to become one of the STAR Apps research users :

  • Pay more attention to the use of typography colors

  • Some of the typography doesn't need to be bolded

  • The brightness of the typography color is even more adjusted

  • Tracking, leading, and spacing are even more customizable

  • In the payment step, namely choosing a digital wallet, instructions or pop ups are given to let you know what you want to do next
